trust
Ngaanyatjarra encounters with prospectors and geologists in the Gibson
Desert began over 100 years ago, forming the basis of many Aboriginal
observations of the European world long before missionaries, government
officials, social researchers or tourists made their presence felt.
Over the last thirty years, oil and mineral exploration has intensified
to the point where negotiations and legal agreements, site protection
and drilling rigs, airport refuelling facilities for aeromagnetic surveys
and employment issues, have all become a significant part of today’s
cross cultural encounter.
trust
is an exhibition that captures some of these moments. Snapshots of the
relationships that have been forged between individuals and organisations
at the interface of two very different world views, are reflected in
black and white photographs taken from the 1930s through to the 1970s,
maps, exploration paraphernalia and archival footage, contemporary acrylic
paintings and installation works.
The exhibition is
accompanied by a colour catalogue with photographs
of art works, essays and personal reflections.
