General Information & Statistics

Communities
Warburton; Tjirrkarli; Jameson; Blackstone; Wingellina; Warakurna; Tjukurla; Wanarn; Patjarr

Location
Community The Shire's isolated location 1,542 km from Perth impacts on the cost of virtually every facet of its operations. The Shire's distance from Perth is not a true indicator of remoteness because of the 560 km of gravel road involved. This is the equivalent of Perth to Kalgoorlie. The Shire is unique today in being so far from bitumen roads.

Virtually all materials must be transported by road to the Shire whilst most service providers can only access the Shire by the bi-weekly air service from Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie. Flights depart Kalgoorlie for Alice Springs via Warburton on Tuesday and Friday returning on Monday and Thursday.

Significant Local Events
The "Desert Dust Up" - a coming together of 8 remote community schools for sports, crafts, band music & discos - Sept; Ngaanyatjarra Football Association grand final - September.

Full Council Meeting
First Wednesday in August, October, December, February, April & June

Tourist Attractions
Driving the Great Central Road section of the Outback Highway traversing the middle of the Shire is a great eco-tourism experience passing through the Rawlinson Range, Walter James Ranges, and Gill Pinnacle. Other sites along the Tourism way are Beadell's Tree and Giles Meteorological Station. Tjulyuru Cultural & Civic Centre displays some of the finest Aboriginal art in Australia.

Rating
The Shire receives ex gratia rates from the community leasehold areas and these will be supplemented by service charges as services are introduced. The rates on the community leasehold areas are based directly on unimproved values issued on the community's two leases. The only true rates that the Shire receives is in respect of mining tenements.

Local Industries
Mining exploration, roadhouses, tourism.
