Kayili Artists

Kayili ArtistsKayili Artists is located in Patjarr Community, 243 kilometres north of Warburton, in the Gibson Desert. Kayili Artists is the arts enterprise for the Ngaanyatjarra and Ngaatjatjarra people of Patjarr (Karilywara) and started operations in late 2004.

The artists of Patjarr are recognised nationally and internationally for their high-quality paintings on canvas and many of them have exhibited work through the Warburton Arts Project.

Art and craft is a significant means for expressing Ngaanyatjarra and Ngaatjatjarra culture and identity to a wider Australian public as well as to other Yarnangu, and serves an important role in inter-generational learning in the community. The vitality and continuity of culture and country in Patjarr is the primary ingredient in the strength and individuality of the paintings.

Kayili Artists’ charter is to help the artists of Patjarr to develop a community owned and managed enterprise, generate income and provide resources to sustain and its unique identity and cultural energy.

Kayili Artists has a range of facilities that supports art and craft production. The Patjarr Cultural Centre, next to the airstrip, comprises an art gallery for display, storage and sales of local art and craft, and landscaping for meetings and shelter and a dancing ground for 'inma' (ceremonial singing and dancing).

Architecture staff and students from the universities of NSW and SA, in collaboration with Patjarr Community, designed the Patjarr Culture Centre. The artists of Patjarr have painted murals on the internal and external walls. Apart from the Culture Centre, there is a painting shed and work area and an art centre office.

Kayili Artists welcome visitors to the arts enterprise, but due to the remoteness of Patjarr and the extremely limited facilites, all visitors must book in advance. Further information is available from Kayili Artists.
